Constructed in 1907, the Saint Sophia Cathedral in Harbin was an army church intended for the men of the 4th Infantry Division of Eastern Russia during the construction of the Middle Eastern Railway. Originally a wooden structure, it was eventually renovated in 1932 into a stronger brick-and-wood structure and became the largest Orthodox church in the Far East. In Byzantine and Russian artistic styles, with a Greek crucifixion inside, it stands as a unique masterpiece and symbol of Harbin's modern history.
