Jiuxiang Scenic Area

Jiuxiang Scenic Area is located in the Jiuxiang Yi and Hui Autonomous Township of Yiliang County. The scenic area is densely forested and rich in flora and fauna. It has magnificent mountain valleys and underground caves. It is a typical karst landform. The scenic area has hundreds of caves of all shapes and sizes, many of which are large and numerous. It is known as the “Limestone Cave Museum” and is one of the must-see attractions near Kunming.

  • How to get there:
    Take the GK Coach from East Kunming Coach Terminal to Yiliang (fare about RMB 18), and take the No. 21 bus or hire a taxi to reach Jiuxiang.
    Self-driving route: take the Kunming Ming - Shi Lin Expressway and get off from Shilin Toll. Drive along the Jiuxiang - Shilin tourist way to reach JIuxiang Scenic Spot. The whole distance is about 90 km.

Jiuxiang Scenic Area is a comprehensive scenic spot with the cave landscape as the main body and the natural scenery, human landscape and ethnic customs outside the cave. This unique international sightseeing karst geological park has hundreds of karstic caves in different sizes. The main attractions include: ‘Yin Cui Gorge’ (Green Shades), ‘Fright Gully’, ‘Lion Hall’, ‘Couple Waterfalls’, and ‘Magic Field’.

Yin Cui Gorge – charming and tranquil

It is home to the top gorge in Yunnan. The 1000-meter long valley offers a magnificent sight touring on a boat. The trees on the ancient cliffs are swaying slightly in the wind. The picturesque green water belt extends into the distance. Many poets and writers have left beautiful poems down in the Yin Cui Gorge. Yin Cui Gorge is also called the Lovers Valley.

Jinghun Valley – thrilling

The 700 meter long valley is the most spectacular underground canyon found in China. The steep cliffs rise up about 100 meters to reach the ceiling. The narrowest part is only three or four meters wide. It gives everyone a chill as tourists have to go through the pass.

Couple Waterfalls – stunning

The Couple Waterfalls fall from a cliff more than 30 meters high. The majestic imposing momentum feels almost earth-shattering. The two waterfalls tangled together make a good couple. It gives rise to imagination and impresses visitors.

Lions Hall – Underground Plaza

With a total area of 15,000 m2, the Lions Hall is the largest underground plaza in the world, allowing tens of thousands of people to gather here. The ceiling of the hall consists of only one complete plate with a couple of nest shaped whirls. The entire top panel is just seamless.

Underground Stalactites – Wind Bent Stone Forest

The bat cave is characterized by stalactites, or the upside-down stone forest. The upside down columns show a large inclination, as they have been exposed to air flow from different directions. It is another famous attraction in Jiujiang County.

Magic Field – Wonders of Heaven and Earth

The Magic Field landscape is magnificent and full of pastoral flavor. It is a rare spectacle in the world. It is actually named Bianshi Basic, or Bianshi Lake Group in Jiuxiang. The number of the lakes and the magnificent area of coverage wins its global reputation among the international cave community.

Yi People Village – dense ethnic group style

In the underground world as deep as 100 meters below ground, there is a unique landscape that is home to the ancient Yi people. Mizhi Forest and Tusi Castle have retained well the scenario of the ancient families that lead a simple life down here.
