Liangdao Street

Gastronomic Paradise of Wuhan's Flavorful Delights
Liangdao Street

Liangdao Street is a road located between Simenkou of Jiefang Road and Pangxiejia of Zhongshan Road in Wuchang District, Wuhan City. It is adjacent to Yanzhi Road, Houbu Street, Minzhu Road and Xiaodongmen. There are schools such as Liangdao Street Middle School, Wuhan Middle School, No. 14 Middle School of Wuhan City, Hubei University of Chinese Medicine, Hubei Academy of Fine Arts and so on.

The name of "Liangdao Street" originates from the Grain Intendant's Office that was established here during the Qing Dynasty. However, its earliest manifestation of fame had nothing to do with delicious food and snacks, but rather with the atmosphere of learning and the outstanding talents. As one of the founders of New China, Dong Biwu had an inseparable historical affection for Wuhan and Liangdao Street. The story of him pawning his fur coat in the coldest days of winter to establish the private Wuhan Middle School is surely something that many old residents of Wuchang will never forget, and they will never forget to educate their next generation about it either. In order to raise funds for running the school, Dong Biwu, who was as clean as a whistle, pawned the warm fur gown he was wearing at that time and founded a middle school named "Wuhan" (in 1920), which educated a group of revolutionaries who took it as their mission to transform society. This middle school is still located on today's Liangdao Street.
