Wuhan University, located at the foot of Luojia Mountain by the side of East Lake in Wuhan City, is a comprehensive national key university directly under the Ministry of Education. Wuhan University covers an area of 5,195 mu, with a building area of 2.95 million square meters. Since its campus is situated within the Wuhan East Lake Scenic Area, a national-level key scenic spot, the campus features clear waters and green mountains. Coupled with the group of simple and elegant historical buildings on campus, the entire campus has become an excellent scenic spot, and it is renowned as one of the "most beautiful university campuses in China".
The most beautiful scenery of Wuhan University is in spring. There are more than 3,000 adult cherry blossom trees on the campus of Wuhan University. Most of these cherry blossom trees are varieties such as the weeping large-leaved early cherry, Prunus cerasoides var. rubea, Japanese cherry, and Cerasus serrulata, etc. The planting history of these cherry blossom trees can be traced back to the 1930s of the last century. During the annual cherry blossom viewing season of Wuhan University, a large number of tourists are attracted to admire the flowers.
It is the first stop for tourists visiting Wuhan University, and also the start of the long history of Wuhan University. Since Wuhan University chose its location on Luojia Mountain, there has been a memorial archway. But the original memorial archway was a wooden one built in 1931 and vanished without a trace in a tornado. In 1937, it was reconstructed as a stone commemorative archway, but not at the present main gate of the school. It was where the bustling area of Quanye Market was located more than one thousand meters to the south, and that was the very gate of Wuhan University at that time.
After entering the main gate, there is a sloping road going uphill. As you gradually climb up the mountain, there is a large expanse of grassland on the right side along the way. The College of Life Sciences, the School of Physics, the new library building and the teaching buildings are scattered among them. On sunny days, the scenery on the lawn is really pleasant, making it a great place for college students and tourists to fly kites, go rollerblading and take photos. After passing the roundabout halfway up the mountain and going further ahead, on the left side of the road, behind the statue of Li Siguang on a small patch of grassland, an antique two-story building reveals its majestic figure amidst the camphor tree forest. This is the Songqing Gymnasium.
It is an important destination on the sightseeing trip of Wuhan University. Old Dormitory Buildings in Yingyuan are among the most ancient buildings in Wuhan University. They feature a grand and imposing exterior with intriguing details that are worthy of careful study.
The Cherry Blossom Avenue in front of the dormitory buildings has long been famous. The 300-meter-long Cherry Blossom Avenue witnesses cherry blossoms in full bloom every March, and it's the very center of cherry blossom appreciation annually.
The rooftop platform of the Old Dormitory Buildings in Yingyuan is the highest point of the architectural complex of Wuhan University. Climbing up to the rooftop platform and looking into the distance, one can have a bird's-eye view of the scenery. Besides, there is the proudly standing Old Library on the mountaintop with a magnificent outlook.
Descending the steps from the Old Dormitory Buildings in Yingyuan and crossing the Cherry Blossom Avenue, you will see a hillside planted with various flowers and trees. This is the legendary "Lovers' Slope". Many universities have a Lovers' Slope. Just as its name suggests, the Lovers' Slope is an ideal place for lovers to date. The Lovers' Slope of Wuhan University is quite famous among the students of colleges and universities in Wuhan. Since the Old Dormitory Buildings in Yingyuan had long served as the girls' dormitory, campus lovers often met here, and thus it got its name. There are several camphor trees that can block out the sun, as well as metasequoias, hibiscuses, peach blossoms, red plums, and so on. Even in summer, this place is shaded and cool.
