Stilted Building Complex

Stilted Building ComplexStilted Building Complex

As a unique traditional residential architecture in the southwest region of China, stilted buildings can be traced back to before the Eastern Han Dynasty at the earliest. Due to the numerous mountains and the shortage of land in Chongqing, the ancestors made use of the terrain along the mountains and adapted to local conditions. They used wooden strips and bamboo squares to build houses suspended in the air, with the buildings cantilevered over steep cliffs, and constructed one building after another along the mountains. Relying on the mountains, leaning against the cliffs, and facing the river are the unique features of Chongqing's stilted buildings.

The stilted building complex of Hongya Cave has restored the appearance of the ancient capital of Bayu. It centrally showcases the most characteristic stilted buildings, ancient memorial archways, wooden hanging flowers, cantilever beams, carved corridors, mid-mountain market streets, bluestone roads and other mountain dwellings of ancient Chongqing. A group of 13-story stilted buildings has been built on the precipitous cliffs. Therefore, it is known as the "Chinese Cliff City" in the architectural industry and praised as the "City in the Sky" by Chinese and foreign media.
