Zhongshan Park is the largest park in Qingdao. It is surrounded by mountains on three sides and the sea to the south. The park featuring the natural beauty of lush forests is the most characteristic scenic spot in the urban landscape of Qingdao. The park is located close to Taiping Mountain and Qingdao Botanical Garden in the east, Qingdao Zoo and Qingdao Beech Park in the north, Baihuayuan with numerous flora in the west. The sea of the flowers and the trees in the park around the year is very pleasing and encourages a sense of prosperity.
The lush forests in this park make it the most unique scenic spot in the urban landscape of Qingdao. It is the also the largest cherry blossoming spot in Qingdao, with over 20,000 plants. The annual cherry blossom festival happens in April and May. The park also has sculptures from the Provincial Expo and the facilities of Qingdao Just High Amusement Park, which is suitable for children.
During the Cherry Blossom Festival, Zhongshan Park is full of all sorts of people – men, women and children. Tourists who come to appreciate the scene are all part of a picture of harmony. Against the blossoms are people who are smiling or laughing. All distractions and annoyance can be left behind in this occasion. When people linger in this beautiful scenery, a couple of hours can slip away easily.
The annual Summer Lantern Festival and the Autumn Chrysanthemum Show are also the most popular activities for visitors. Every year on midsummer nights, the park is full of lanterns, and various official lamps, gauze lamps, boat lanterns and park lanterns from Chengdu, Zigong, Nanjing, and other places are all full of colorful lights. Lantern fans especially come to the venue. The lantern festival began in 1979, and since then, it has gradually become an event comparable to the Cherry Blossom Event.
In 1994, a large elevated sightseeing cableway was built in the park, adding a new entertainment facility to Zhongshan Park. The ropeway is 1,100 meters long and has 110 comfortable chair lifts. It can be divided into two routes, one from Zhongshan Park to Taiping Mountain and the other one from Taiping Mountain to the Botanical Garden. The two-way trips both take about 30 minutes. Visitors can take in the landscape from when the air.
