FAQs about Panda Volunteer Program

How to Choose a Panda Base?

Most tourists (80%-90%) choose the Dujiangyan Panda Base for its convenient location and variety of animals, including giant pandas, red pandas, and black bears.
If you're looking for a more remote and unique experience, consider the Shenshuping Panda Base or Bifengxia Panda Base. These locations are less crowded, offering a more peaceful and immersive visit.

What is the best time to see pandas?

You can visit pandas year-round, but each season offers a different experience:
Spring: Pandas are more active during their annual mating season.
Summer: Panda cubs are born, especially at the Chengdu Research Base, but they tend to stay indoors due to the heat. Expect large crowds during summer holidays.
Autumn: After the National Day holiday, crowds thin, and cooler weather makes the pandas more playful.
Winter: Pandas are very active in the cold. If you're lucky, you might see them rolling in the snow at Wolong or Ya'an bases.
No matter the season, pandas in Sichuan are ready to welcome you!

Why Do We Help Pandas Break Bamboo?

In the wild, pandas live about 15-20 years, while in captivity, they can live 25-30 years. A major reason for this difference is that wild pandas wear down their teeth by chewing tough bamboo, leading to early tooth loss and difficulty eating.
In captivity, keepers help by breaking the bamboo into smaller pieces, which protects the pandas' teeth and extends their lifespan.

Why Do Keepers Make "Wowotou" for Pandas?

In the wild, pandas sometimes supplement their diet with small animals or carrion to get essential nutrients. In captivity, keepers provide these nutrients through "wowotou" (steamed buns).
Wowotou is made from a mix of bamboo powder, soybean powder, cornmeal, rice flour, sugar, calcium, salt, and eggs. The ingredients are blended, shaped by hand, steamed, and stored. Each wowotou weighs about 300-400 grams, and pandas are fed four times a day with carefully measured portions.
