The Glass Trail in Tianmen Mountain is suspended over the west line of the Tianmen mountaintop. It is 60 meters long and 1.6 meters wide, with its highest elevation up to 1,430 meters. The Glass Trail is so exciting and shocking that it can be compared to the well-known Glass Trail in U.S. Grand Canyon—“Skywalk”. Thus it has the reputation for being the Oriental “Skywalk”.
There are 2 glass trails on the top of Tianmen Mountain, one on the east side and the other on the west. The one on the west side of the mountain is more well-known along with the Guigu Plank walk. It is made of rigid, toughened glass and surrounded by metal railings. Stepping on the transparent glass, you may be greatly shocked by the seemingly frightening glass trail. When walking on the trail, you seem to float a thousand meters high in the sky with the terrifying abyss and rolling clouds under your feet. On sunny days, with the reflection of the blue sky and fluffy white clouds covering the whole trail, you will enjoy the delight of walking on the clouds while stepping on the transparent glass with great care. On cloudy days, the glass trail is partly hidden and partly visible in the fog, and you may be amazed to see such heavenly beautiful scenery.
Toughened glass is a kind of prestressed glass. In order to improve the strength of glass, a chemical or physical method is usually used to form compressive stress on the surface of glass, which can withstand the external pressure. In this way, the glass has better capacity for weight-bearing, and for resistance to wind pressure, to the impact of temperature fluctuations, and of impulsive force.
In Zhangjiajia City, the temperature varies greatly between day and night, but there is relatively little variation between the four seasons. The temperature difference between the core scenic spots and city center in Zhangjiajie City is nearly 5-10℃. In summer, you need to bring sunscreen and cover up with a thin quilt at night. Thus you’d better bring long-sleeved clothes when checking into the hotel on the mountaintop at night. In autumn and winter, you’re recommended to wear clothes for spring or autumn, such as a jacket, suit or thin woolen sweater, when visiting Zhangjiajie City. Those advanced in age or weak in health should wear a jacket or a woolen sweater with a coat. Since it rains a lot in Zhangjiajie City, you’d better put on high-quality anti-skid shoes and bring an umbrella or rain-proof clothes.
