How is the weather in Kunming?

Kunming is located in the low-latitude monsoon climate zone, with warm and comfortable weather throughout the year. It is never too cold in winter nor too hot in summer, and flowers bloom all year round, thus Kunming is given the nickname "Spring City". Weather here changes little throughout the year with no severe summer or cold winter. Kunming has two seasons rather than four – the wet season and the dry season. The wet season ranges from May to October (85% of the annual precipitation) and the dry season begins in November and lasts until April in the following year (15% of the annual precipitation).

Spring

Weather: The spring is warm and dry with exuberant evaporation. There is a large temperature difference between day and night.
Clothing: The temperature fluctuations between day and night require two layers of breathable clothes or shirts and warm jackets. In the warmer hours, remove the outer layer, or change all the layers.
Things to do: Jiaozi Snow Mountain (located in northern central Yunnan) is a highlight for the tour in the spring. The ice lakes and brooks flare under the sunshine as the snow begins to melt. The wild fauna and flora wake up from a winter sleep.

Summer

Weather: As there are no blistering hot days, the downpours occur frequently.
Clothing: Short-sleeves, shorts and skirts are proper clothing in the morning. Please put on pants and jackets to fend off the cold in the evening. Outdoor jackets are recommended for tourists in Yunnan. Sudden rainfall may give you a cold.
Things to do: The Stone Forest or Shilin has beautiful scenery especially when looked down on from the top. When it is clear, Shilin looks even more fantastic against the azure sky.

Autumn

Weather: It is cool in fall with decreased rainfall. The temperature drops quickly. The rainfall in this season is actually only second to that in the summer.
Clothing: Summer clothing is suitable for the days before October. Consider putting on long-sleeves and pants in the evening. The thermal pants become necessary in November when the temperature drops in the evening.
Things to do: Dongchuan Red Land, located in southeast side of Kunming and 40 km away, will offer three colors against the blue sky. The landscape presents a great opportunity for tourists and photographers.

Winter

Weather: The winter is not harsh at all. There is little rain and abundant sunshine.
Clothing: Warm knit sweaters, woolen pullovers, or padded and down jackets will tide you over the cold morning and evening. When the temperature picks up in the noon, you can take them off for a while.
Things to do: As the destination of migratory birds who fly from the north, Dian Lake, Haigeng Park and Green Lake Park are densely populated with migratory birds in winter. It is one of the great wonders for tourists to see.
