Datong Weather

Datong is located in the northern part of Shanxi Province, at the junction of the three provinces of Shanxi, Hebei and Inner Mongolia, on the northeastern edge of the Loess Plateau. It has a temperate continental monsoon climate and has four distinct seasons. In spring, the temperature picks up rapidly, and the average temperature is around 6.5-9.1°C (44-48°F). The wind blows a lot and it has less rainfall than summer. The summer is relatively mild with an average temperature that stays between 19 and 21.8°C (66-71°F). 64.3% of the annual precipitation falls during that short time. When autumn comes, the temperature gradually decreases. People generally experience a long winter, sometimes as long as four months. The northwest wind blows heavily. Spring

Weather: Spring is the coldest period for the whole year. The lowest temperature can reach -23° C (-9°F). And the rainfall is also the least. Most of the days are either sunny or cloudy.

Clothing: Put on cotton padded clothes, down-filled jackets, warm hats, scarves and gloves from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Staying indoors between 6 pm and 8 am on the next day for keeping warm can be a wise choice.

Things to do: It is chilly in spring, but the vitality of nature can still be felt. For instance, the greens and flowers at Wenying Lake Park and Shenxi Park with green water all provide opportunities to admire nature.

Summer

Weather: The temperature is usually high during the day time and the temperature difference between day and night is large. Temperatures range from 15°C/59.0°F to 33°C/91.4°F. Compared to other regions in China, Datong has a cooler summer and moderate rainfall.

Clothing: Put on T-shirts, shorts or skirts between 9:00 am and 6:00 pm. Long trousers and a thin coat between 7:00 pm to 8:00 in the next morning are good. Occasionally, rain gear can be required for outdoor activities. Apply sun protection measures on sunny days to avoid sun burn.

Things to do: Datong offers cool summer resorts. The blue sky, the cool wind, the parks and roads shaded by trees are all cool. Strolling in Huayan Temple, one can feel the peace and coolness. A tour in Guangling Wetland means the appreciation of the nature.

Autumn

Weather: The autumn is relatively cool. The rainfall decreases gradually. The average maximum temperature is around 25 °C / 77 °F.

Clothing: T-shirts with trousers for daytime and jackets for keeping warm at night and in the morning are the common practice.

Things to do: The autumn of Datong is cool. The refreshing air brings a good feeling to everyone walking on the street. At this time, going mountain climbing to Hengshan or a visit to murals in Yungang are all favored choices.

Winter

Weather: it can be extremely cold in winter and temperature differences between day and night are huge. The lowest temperature can reach -19 °C (-2.2°F), and the rain is scarce.

Clothing: People put on cotton-padded clothes and down-filled jackets to fend off the cold between 11:00 and 4:00 pm. It is recommended that you stay indoors from 6:00 pm to 10:00 in the next morning for keeping warm.

Things to do: In winter, you can be in the snow-white world of Wanlong Ski Resort. The speed and passion on the innocent "white carpet” is just fantastic. Or, people can experience the magical science fiction tour of the Fantawild Adventure. After the outdoor activities, you can also feel unique warmth in the cold winter from the hot springs such as Tangtou Hot Spring and Jiulong Hot Spring.
