What is the weather like in Lijiang?

Lijiang City is located at the junction of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and the Tibetan Plateau, in the northwest of Yunnan Province, surrounded by a whole lot of mountains. The climate here is a low-latitude plateau monsoon climate. The solar radiation is strong all year round, with strong ultraviolet rays and sufficient sunshine as well. In the winter, it is dry and windy, while in the summer it is cool and rainy. The annual temperature difference in Lijiang is small, but the temperature difference between day and night is large. In most places, the autumn comes sooner than expected, which makes short summers. There are distinct dry and wet seasons. The rainy season is from May to October, which accounts for more than 85% of the rainfall for the whole year. There is a greater concentration of rainfall during July and August. Spring

Weather: The temperature is about 5°C/41°F – 20°C/60°F. It is usually sunny. In the spring, the wind can be strong in Lijiang and the air is dry.

Clothing: From 10 am to 5 pm, long sleeves and long trousers are suitable. From 6 pm to 9 am the next day, it is better to wear a coat or a thin sweater.

Things to do: March and April are the best flower-viewing seasons in Lashihai. In the ancient city of Lijiang and the ancient city of Shuhe, there are also roses everywhere. The temperature in the Tiger Leaping Gorge in the late spring and early summer is moderate. The meadows are decorated with lots of different flowers and the scenery is charming.

Summer

Weather: The temperature is about 10°C/50°F – 26°C/78.8°F. In summer, it is the rainy season. It is cooler in the morning and evening. During the day, it is warm outdoors, in the sun, but still cool indoors.

Clothing: From 9 am to 6 pm, T-shirts with trousers or long skirts are suitable. From 7 pm to 8 am the next day, you would do better to wear a thin coat. In August, it is still the rainy season and there is a lot of rain. It is recommended that you go out with rain gear or a waterproof jacket. The ultraviolet rays are strong when it is not raining. Therefore it is recommended that you go out with adequate sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses. The ultraviolet rays can be strong during the summer in Lijiang. In the afternoon, the city is exposed to direct sunlight for more than 2 hours. Therefore, it is necessary to take sun protection measures so that you don’t get sunburned.

Things to do: You can visit the Dayan Ancient Town or Shuhe Ancient Town in Lijiang, where you can enjoy a cool summer. You can also climb the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and enjoy the snow.

Autumn

Weather: The temperature in Lijiang during the autumn is high, with an average temperature of 22 °C / 71.6 °F. The weather changes quickly, and it can be cold in the morning and evening.

Clothing: From 10 am to 5 pm, long dresses or T-shirts with trousers are suitable. From 6 pm to 9 am the next day, it is better to wear a jacket or thin sweater. Please check the weather before going out. If it seems cloudy, it is highly recommended that you bring rain gear or a waterproof jacket.

Things to do: Lashihai is the largest plateau lake in Lijiang. Here, you can experience riding a horse along the ancient tea-horse road, or go boating on the lake. Autumn is also a good season to visit Lugu lake, and enjoy the mountains and lakes decorated by golden autumn leaves.

Winter

Weather: During the day, the temperature ranges from 0°C/32°F to 15°C/59°F. The temperature is low and the air is dry. During night, the temperature can be as low as zero (0°C/32°F) or below. In most cases, it is sunny.

Clothing: From 11:00 am to 5:00 pm, long sleeves and long pants with sweaters and coats are suitable. From 6 pm to 10 am the next day, you would do better to wear a down jacket or a winter coat.

Things to do: Winter is the best season to watch birds. There are various wild ducks and migratory birds on the Lugu lake, which turns into a world of waterfowl during winter.
