How is the weather in Zhangjiajie?

Zhangjiajie is a prefecture-level city in the northwestern part of Hunan Province, deep in the hinterland of the Wuyi Mountains. It has a humid mid-subtropical monsoonal climate. The rainfall is abundant and the sunshine is generally sufficient. It has a long frost-free period and a short cold period. The average annual temperature is 16°C (60.8°F). Its average temperature in July, the hottest month, is about 27°C (80.6°F) and the average value in January, the coldest month, is 4°C (39.2°F).

Spring

Weather: The weather in Zhangjiajie in spring is complex and changeable. As the temperature picks up slowly, it may also drop quickly. There can be heavy rain and light snow high in the mountains.

Clothing Although jackets are needed for tourists in March, only cotton and linen fabrics are required in April. Skirts and long-sleeved breathable T-shirts are reasonable choices. Please bring along long-sleeved jackets for sudden drops in temperature. When it comes to May, summer clothing such as short sleeves and shorts are recommended. Bring rain gear and pay close attention to the weather, typically the chance of rainstorms. Please take measures to prevent catching a cold.

Summer

Weather: In June, the temperature in Zhangjiajie increases rapidly and it is pretty hot. July is very rainy and the average temperature stays around 35 °C (96°F).

Clothing In the summer, tourists can wear thin short-sleeved shirts. Some people put their sun-proof clothing into their traveling suitcase. In the rainy summer, it is wise to bring rain gear and anti-skid shoes. Long-sleeves are necessary for spending evenings in the scenic areas in Zhangjiajie. It is very cool in the evening.

Things to do: Tourists may spend July and August to escape the heat. But the rainy June is no good for taking photographs. The changeable weather in the scenic areas usually means heavy fog. However, people who reach the top of Tianzi Mountain when the sun shines again after the rain will bathe in a splendid sea of clouds.

Weather: The air in autumn is fresh and the weather is pleasant. It is neither too hot nor too cold. After entering mid-September, the temperature differences between day and night are relatively large.
